EUFORES 17th Inter-Parliamentary Meeting on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency - Chapter II

"Baltic Sea energy cooperation - stronger together on the way to a 100% RES energy system"

29 September 2017, Parliament of Estonia, Tallinn

Event Summary

The second chapter of the IPM17 focussed strongly on regional cooperation in the Baltic Sea region and the potential this holds regarding a 100% RES energy system. Speakers included Members of the European Parliament Claude Turmes (EUFORES President) and Theresa Griffin (EUFORES Vice-president) as well as Member of the Estonian Parliament and conference host Rainer Vakra. General input was given by policy makers, experts and industry representatives from various levels, such as Andreea-Petronela Tanasa (European Commission), Ando Leppiman (Estonian Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications), Pekka Lundmark (Fortum) and Peder Andreasen (DK Energienet).

In a session on the overall perspective of renewables in the Baltics Christian Breyer (Lappeenranta University of Technology), Martin Kruus (4ENERGIA), Martin Neubert (DONG Energy), Michael Laho (Volter), Monika Morawiecka (Polish Electricity Association) and Hakan Wirten (WWF Sweden) discussed various scenarios, cooperation possibilities and best practice examples to increase the deployment of renewable energy sources in the Baltics and enable a sustainable energy transition in the region.

The afternoon session was chaired by Estonian MP Kalle Palling and focussed on the connection between digitalisation and renewables. Presentations were given on ways to empower consumers (Josh Roberts, REScoop.eu), smart grids as ways to optimise network management (Taavi Veskimägi, Elering), digital strategies towards 100% RES-Regions (Björn Spiegel, Arge Netz) and the correlation between digitalisation, energy storage and citizen’s engagement (Giorgia Concas, Solar Power Europe)

The conference finished with a panel debate on “The winter package – a dream or nightmare? Hard talk between Mps and MEPs”, including panellists from different Member States such as Member of the German Parliament Bärbel Höhn and Harry Jaskari, Member of the Finnish Parliament.  The discussion was moderated by Stuart Reigeluth (Revolve Media).
