9th Inter-Parliamentary Meeting on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency

The 9th Inter-Parliamentary Meeting took place on 18th November 2009 in the Parliament of Belgium, Brussels.

More than 100 participants attended the IPM9 that was split into two main sessions. The first part focused on the new European Framework Directive for Renewables (RES-Directive), more specifically the National Renewable Energy Action Plans that Member States will have to submit by June 2010.

In a second part the IPM9 informed about the National Energy Efficiency Actions Plan (NEEAPs), the latest news from the Energy Efficiency Watch (EEW) as well as current major EU legislative pieces like the Labelling and Buildings Directive.

Half of the participants were Members of Parliaments, government officials and European Commission representatives that discussed the latest developments in the two fields together with selected experts from industry, science, the media and NGO-sector.

In a closed session the attending Members of Parliaments from EU-Member States and the European Parliament adopted the Brussels Declaration 2009.

Key requests of the Members of Parliaments are:

  • Ambitious and timely National Renewable Energy Action Plans by 30 June 2010
  • Binding 20% efficiency target for 2020 in a new European Energy Efficiency Action Plan
  • Key role of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency in the climate negotiations in Copenhagen December 2009
