EUFORES "Exchange on the Revision of the Renewable Energy Directive II and the Energy Efficiency Directive"
EUFORES organised on 4 February 2021 an online roundtable discussion with Kadri Simson, Commissioner for Energy and Members of the European Parliament, for an exchange on the Revisions of the Renewable Energy Directive II and Energy Efficiency Directive.
As foreseen in the respective directives and in light of the adaptations due to the Green Deal, RED II and EED will be revised in Summer 2021. Commissioner Simson explained that the National Energy and Climate Plans fall short and that the review of the EED and RED will play an important part in increasing our ambitions. For delivering on higher energy efficiency goals the renovation wave will play a crucial role, and the share of renewables have to significantly increase across sectors. Commissioner Simson presented the proposals that the Commission has prepared to date and received cross-party feedback from leading MEPs on the potential adaptations of RED II and EED.

Background information:
Following the European Commission plan to reduce EU greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030, the EU will have to further increase the share of renewable energy and energy efficiency. Revisions of the Renewable Energy Directive and of the Energy Efficiency Directive are necessary to implement the new ambitious 2030 climate target. The Commission is now busy with consultations and analysis to have detailed legislative proposals by June 2021.
